What is vascular ultrasound and what do vascular sonographers do?

There are three major areas of diagnostic medical ultrasound: vascular, cardiac and general. In the vascular concentration, ultrasound is used to see and investigate essentially all of the major arteries and veins of the body, as well as measure blood flow velocity and pressure. Ultrasound is noninvasive; it does not invade the body by needle insertion or x-ray. The arteries, veins, pathology and flow characteristics can be seen and heard in real time on a monitor as the sonographer moves the transducer over the area of interest and sets the appropriate equipment controls to optimize the data.
