History of the Department of Biochemistry
The PhD program in biochemistry, established in 1984, provides education, training and research opportunities to students interested in the field of medically-related biochemistry. Beginning in 1980, the Department of Biochemistry recruited faculty with a strong commitment to arthritis research and expertise in the fields of cartilage degeneration and repair, chondrocyte biochemistry and chondrocyte cell and molecular biology. This faculty has a long history of training young scientists in these research areas. In 1996, through the NIAMS of the NIH, the department was awarded a training grant entitled "Training in Cartilage Research," which supports the education of graduate students and post-doctoral fellows.
