Welcome from the Chairperson

We practice what we teach and teach what we practice.

I welcome your interest in our community of occupational therapy faculty and students who are committed to education and practice through the practitioner-teacher-investigator model. Our program is in one of the top medical centers, Rush University Medical Center. The Rush University model of practitioner-teacher-investigator provides for a synthesis of education, patient care and research central to the mission and philosophy of the department, the university and the medical center.

Historical Overview of the Program

Since the early years in Rush's institutional history occupational therapy has maintained a presence. Archives indicate the Women's Board Auxiliary donated funds in 1916 to establish classes in occupation to be organized and managed by Susan Tracy, a well-known figure in occupational therapy history. The Occupational Therapy Department was established shortly thereafter, and was supported by the Women's Board Auxiliary until 1937, when the hospital assumed administrative responsibility for occupational therapy. Service has been provided to a wide variety of programs and clientele from that time to the present.
