Rosemarie Suhayda, PhD, APRN-BC, received notice from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that her grant submission was approved for the Advanced Education Nursing Traineeship in the amount of $700,000. This grant will support primary care nurse practitioner students at Rush University College of Nursing. The Advanced Education Nursing Traineeship was awarded to only 71 nursing programs throughout the nation through a competitive process, and Rush was one of only three schools selected in Illinois.

As project director on the grant, Suhayda received the maximum allowable amount of $350,000 for the 2012 - 2013 academic year and an additional $350,000 for 2013 - 2014*. In a funding opportunity announcement by the Health Resources and Services Administration on March 22, the administration said the purpose of this grant is to address the deficit of primary care workers by supporting students in their pursuit of higher education. Suhayda and the Rush University Office of Financial Aid will work together for disbursement of the funds that will be used to pay for costs associated with tuition, books, fees and reasonable living expenses for nursing students enrolled in a primary care track of an advanced specialty program.

Rosemarie Suhayda, PhD, APRN-BC is associate professor and director of evaluation for Rush University College of Nursing, and director of university assessment and student learning for Rush University.
