Throughout November, many men have been growing mustaches as part of the annual Movember campaign to raise awareness for cancers that affect men. This year, a team comprised of radiology residents (with a few attending physicians) from Rush University Medical Center, called "MoDocs," have given their upper lips in support of the cause, Rush University medical students Jeffrey Dodd and Jeremy Swaw, among others, also participated in the Movember campaign. 

 

"The reason for growing mustaches is that we need something to display our support and awareness of men’s cancers, specifically prostate and testicular cancer," writes Kumar Madassery, MD, a member of MoDocs. "In a sense, prostate cancer is the male version of breast cancer. Statistics from the National Cancer Institute show that between 2005 through 2009, approximately 155 out of every 100,000 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer."

 

Movember began in Australia roughly a decade ago and has spread throughout the world. Approximately 2-million people have participated in the campaign, with nearly $300 million raised in that time. You can learn more about MoDocs here and contribute to their efforts at their Movember page.
