Claudia Baier entered the field of philanthropy in 2002 as the first program officer employed by the VNA Foundation, where she remains today. Her work involves furthering the mission of the foundation by building collaborative relationships within the community and across sectors to improve healthcare to medically underserved populations. In addition to her responsibilities at the VNA, Claudia is an Advisory Council member for the Chicago Area Schweitzer Fellowship Program, an active committee member of Chicago Women in Philanthropy, and a member at-large of the Council on Foundations and the American Public Health Association. Claudia is a founding member of the Women?s Leadership Mentoring Program and a Field Placement Coordinator for graduate students from University of Chicago and University of Illinois at Chicago. Claudia is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Preventive Medicine, Section of Social and Community Medicine, at Rush Medical College. Prior to joining the VNA, Claudia helped to establish and eventually directed the Rush Community Service Initiatives Program and earned an Assistant Professorship in the Section of Community and Social Medicine at Rush Medical College. Her work at Rush involved grant writing, teaching/mentoring, and project development and coordination, with research interests in improved access to healthcare for medically disenfranchised populations, violence prevention, and the employment of community health workers ? an interest area in which she remains involved. Claudia has also directed health education at the American Lung Association of Metropolitan Chicago, coordinated employee health promotion for Rush Medical Center, and was the health education specialist for children?s programming at ANCHOR HMO. Claudia has an undergraduate degree in psychology and worked in community-based settings with emotionally and behaviorally challenged children and adolescents before earning a Master?s Degree in Public Health in 1986.
