Barbara Swanson, PhD, RN, FAAN, is a professor in the Department of Adult Health and Gerontological Nursing at Rush University College of Nursing, with an interest in complementary/alternative therapies. She has conducted research to study the effects of complementary therapies to reduce inflammation and its sequelae in persons with HIV/AIDS. She currently has funding from NIH/NIMHD to conduct a clinical trial of fish oil to favorably modulate parameters of immune senescence and gut permeability in HIV-infected persons (P20 MD006886-01). Swanson has published over 70 articles and book chapters, serves on several editorial boards of interdisciplinary peer-reviewed journals, and is the lead editor of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care Core Curriculum, 3rd edition (2009).
