Barbara Swanson, PhD, RN, ACRN, is an associate professor in the Department of Adult Health Nursing at Rush University College of Nursing, with an interest in complementary/alternative therapies. She has conducted research to study the effects of complementary therapies to modulate parameters of cellular immunity and to manage neuropathic pain in persons with HIV/AIDS. She currently has funding from NIH/NCCAM to conduct a clinical trial of policosanol, a sugar cane-derived dietary supplement used to normalize dyslipidemic profiles, to manage HIV-related dyslipidemia (R21 AT003077-01). She is also co-investigator on studies to test the effects of (a) mindfulness training to manage symptoms in persons with ulcerative colitis and to reduce nursing errors, and (b) the dietary supplement, glucomannan, on weight loss. Swanson has published over 50 articles and book chapters, serves on the editorial board of Biological Research in Nursing, and is the lead editor of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care Core Curriculum, 3rd edition (to be published in 2009).
