Nutritional and Metabolic Diseases
Diabetes diet education in the inpatient and community setting and what influences the dietary behavior of those with diabetes is one research area. The NIH funded randomized controlled trial Lifestyle Improvement through Food and Exercise (LIFE) will determine if a community-based lifestyle intervention can decrease A1C in low-income African Americans with type 2 diabetes. A second area of research is developing simple primary care physician/RD strategies that can be implemented in the pediatric clinic to improve the eating and physical activity behaviors of children and families to prevent or treat pediatric obesity. Research methods used in the past include: questionnaires; individual interviews, focus groups; multiple day weighed food records, and the multiple pass 24-hour food recall method. Keim is a professor in clinical nutrition with primary roles as instructor in diabetes pathophysiology and nutrition care, nutrition counseling methods with an emphasis on motivational interviewing and preceptor for outpatient nutrition counseling.
