Research Interests
Since arriving from the University of Minnesota in 2002, Dr. Oegema has been the Chairman of the Department of Biochemistry and Program Director of the SCOR. His leadership and research interests support the existing interactions with the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, the Division of Rheumatology and Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology.
His research interests are:
* intervertebral disc degeneration
* cartilage/bone interactions
* Related hypertrophic changes in OA
His Interests also include the characterization of proteoglycans and glycosaminoglycans in normal and diseased tissues especially chondroitin sulfate and aggrecan modifications.
Finally in collaboration with Susan Chubinskaya and Marcus Wimmer, he is investigating the role of trauma in initiating OA using in vitro and in vivo models with the goal of developing therapeutic interventions in OA.
