Derek Stiles, PhD, is currently doing charitable hearing aid fittings for an athlete from the Special Olympics. The patient has Down Syndrome. He participated in the very first state games in Illinois roughly 49 years ago and has attended every year since. His current sport is bocce ball.
Stiles and the patient were connected through a collaborate between the Student Academy of Audiology, the Special Olympics and Healthy Hearing. Healthy Hearing uses the internet to educate people about hearing loss and hearing aids, and then encourages them to seek help from a hearing care professional.
