About Rush University

Each year, there are two positions in the Department of Neurosurgery residency program filled through the National Resident Matching Program. Applicants are required to participate in the NRMP application process.

We only accept applications for our residency program through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) application system. Information on how to apply and criteria for the applications can be obtained from their web site. For all technical questions, contact ERAS at

Interview Process

Each application received from ERAS is reviewed by the program director, an attending and a resident who have been selected for this process.

Applications are screened with attention paid to:

  • Performance during the preclinical and clinical years
  • USMLE 1 exam scores
  • USLME 2 exam scores when available
  • Dean's letters
  • Letters of recommendation
  • Extracurricular activities

The screening process does not consider gender, sexual orientation, age, race, religion, ethnic origin, economic status, surname, veteran status or place of residence.

The preferred application deadline is Thursday, October 1st, 2015
2016 Match Interview Dates:
Thursday, November 12, 2015
Thursday, December 10, 2015

The residency coordinator notifies each applicant selected by email. Dates for interviews are provided in the email. Candidates should notify the residency coordinator of their preferred interview date by email.

Interviews are conducted on Thursdays, with a dinner for residents and applicants the evening before. The day of the interview lasts from approximately 7 a.m. to  7 p.m. The day will consist of interviews with the attendings, a tour of the institution, lunch with our residents and resident teaching conferences. There will be an optional cocktail reception for the candidates to talk with the faculty and residents immediately following interviews from 5:30-7:00 PM.

Shortly after the final interviews, the department attendings and residents will meet to review the candidates and determine the rank list order.
