Family Medicine Residency

RUSH Copley Family Residency

The mission of the Family Medicine Residency is to train family medicine physicians who will distinguish themselves by providing excellent care in the practice setting of their choice through training with our diverse population in a community-based, unopposed setting. RUSH Copley Family Medicine Residency provides residents the opportunity to interact and directly work with physicians who are integral to their communities and model the traditional, full spectrum scope of family medicine.

The program provides opportunities for residents and students to practice in an inpatient and outpatient setting located at one site, the RUSH Copley Medical Center campus, on a daily basis. Residents spend the majority of their clinical time at RUSH Copley Medical Center and within RUSH Copley Family Medicine Center, our clinic site. The Family Medicine Center is a model ambulatory care facility with partial open access scheduling allowing patients’ quick availability to their primary care physicians.

As a 210-bed community hospital, RUSH Copley Medical Center provides high-quality care to the community through the use of both traditional medicine services, in which the primary care physician provides inpatient care, and hospitalist services. RUSH Copley Medical Center has received an “A” Hospital Safety Score, the highest possible, from the Leapfrog Group which is a non-profit, patient safety watchdog organization since the organization began rating hospitals in 2012. Our residents’ experiences allow for them to provide the highest quality comprehensive, thorough and up-to-date care to any patient who walks through our doors in either the inpatient or outpatient setting.

RUSH Copley is part of the Rush University System for Health, an academic health system whose mission is to improve the health of individuals and the diverse communities it serves through the integration of outstanding patient care, education, research, and community partnerships. RUSH Copley residents have access to clinical and academic services through RUSH.

RUSH Copley Family Medicine Residency achieves our goals by:

  • Providing a clinical environment that sustains a comprehensive view of primary and preventative health care.
  • Advocating for patients via the creation and nurturing of relationships that promote health and well-being in the context of each individual’s family and community.
  • Promoting patient education and health literacy to ensure appropriate patient understanding and active participation in their medical care.
  • Maintaining the highest standards of clinical practice through efficient, effective, safe, high-quality, and fiscally responsible care.
  • Stressing the importance of life-long learning by providing opportunities to participate in various continuing education programming.
  • Increasing awareness of the changing health care environment and its impact on the practice of medicine, hospitals and the communities in which we serve.

RUSH Copley Family Medicine Residency provides a comprehensive, relevant, and evidence-based educational experience that includes both clinical rotations, longitudinal experiences and didactic sessions. Our faculty members have varied educational and clinical backgrounds and are enthusiastic about teaching residents and medical students the full scope of family medicine practice.

The residency is committed to growing the patient-provider relationship in order to ultimately generate better health outcomes at both the individual and population levels. As part of our educational curriculum, we develop and maintain ongoing, innovative clinical research and quality improvement projects. New approaches to clinical problems will improve health outcomes for our patients and our community. In addition to participating in scholarly activity, our residents teach students from local medical schools, including RUSH Medical College, University of Illinois at Chicago, and the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine of Midwestern University. These interactions provide the residents opportunities to practice and refine their teaching and leadership abilities.

The Family Medicine Residency adheres to the goals and objectives of the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM), the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), and the Residency Review Committee (RRC).
