The Section of Biostatistics and Epidemiology is comprised of three groups: The Section of Biostatistics, the Epidemiology Group and the Data Management Center.

Biostatistics

The Section of Biostatistics works closely with sections in the department and select other groups within the medical center on the development of new research protocols and the analysis of existing projects.

Epidemiology

The Epidemiology Group specializes in two main areas. The first is women's health, with particular emphases on the menopausal transition, psychosocial influences on early changes in cardiovascular risk, and decline in cognitive function as women age. The second is on the promotion of lifestyle changes that enhance cardiovascular health. The section features expertise in the design and conduct of behavioral randomized clinical trials.

Data Management Center

The Data Management Center (DMC) provides for the data management needs of the Department of Preventive Medicine as well as other select projects in the Rush community. The DMC staff has experience in research (randomized clinical trials, cohort studies, multi-site studies) and departmental administrative database systems.

The DMC specializes in:

Initial Grant Start Up

  • Write data management protocols and budgets
  • Design and create printed or electronic Case Report Forms
  • Design, program and maintain databases
  • Create flow charts and protocols of data collection
  • Produce Data Dictionaries and Standard Operation Procedures (SOP's)
  • More as needed

Study Data Collection

  • Assist in randomization process
  • Maintain database
  • Ensure data security
  • Provide data entry
  • Ongoing quality assurance audits and queries
  • Create custom internal/external reports
  • More as needed

Completion of Study/Abstracts/Papers

  • Clean data
  • Create data sets for analysis
  • Assistance with graphics, tables and flow charts for slides/posters/papers
  • Archive Data
