The mission of the department is to improve the health of the public and reduce the burden of chronic disease, especially in underserved populations, by optimizing the integration of diverse talents to conduct high quality research, service and education.
The Department of Preventive Medicine has a long track record of research in clinical trials and longitudinal studies sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and numerous multi-center drug trials. Physicians in the department see thousands of patients each year in the Rush Prevention Center. Typically, these patients are at high risk for cardiovascular disease and/or diabetes, or have had difficulty controlling blood pressure.
