About Rush University

Our goal is to prepare dietitians to function as specialists in the nutrition care of critically ill patients requiring enteral and parenteral nutrition. This practicum experience encompasses a variety of clinical and scholarly activities designed to polish skills unique to the critical care environment. The emphasis of the program is to apply evidence-based research with practical clinical experience to the practice of nutrition support.

Program Testimonials

"This program is an excellent educational experience for dietitians looking to advance their skills in parenteral and enteral nutrition support. Using evidence-based practice, the program provides the skills necessary to make adjustments to parenteral and enteral nutrition based on individual considerations."

"The program greatly expanded my knowledge of analyzing biochemical data, assessing individual needs with regards to organ function, and metabolic and clinical changes of critically ill patients in the ICU. Also, it provided practice for calculating and changing electrolytes in the parenteral nutrition formula, which initially seemed challenging but soon became apparent."

"I have applied the skills I learned in the ICU Nutrition Support Practicum in my current job by working to establish a nutrition support team with the dietitian taking a more active role in parenteral nutrition order writing. I would highly recommend the program to any dietitian seeking a more active role in parenteral nutrition support and those looking to expand their knowledge beyond macronutrient adjustments."

"I enjoyed making rounds on patients with both the surgical and medical ICU teams. Rounding with the team gave an in-depth understanding of patient's diagnosis, treatment plan and gave an opportunity to clarify any indications or contraindications for feeding the patients."

"I learned even more than I thought I would in my week at Rush."

"The dietitians were extremely knowledgeable and very willing to share what they knew, based on evidence-based research. The hands-on experience beat any seminar or educational series I've ever attended!"
