About Rush University

Second-year students spend 32 weeks on rotation through the clinical laboratories, gaining knowledge and experience performing various diagnostic laboratory procedures. Currently the Department of Medical Laboratory Science affiliates with Rush Medical Laboratories, Northwestern Memorial Hospital Clinical Laboratories, the University of Chicago Clinical Laboratories, the University of Illinois Medical Center at Chicago Clinical Laboratories and Lurie Children's Hospital Clinical Laboratories. All affiliate laboratories are in tertiary care institutions.

The specialty practicum provides students with an opportunity to select a specific laboratory that interests them. Students spend four weeks learning advanced techniques and exploring the latest technology available in the clinical area of choice. Areas may include bone marrow cell analysis, advanced genetics, advanced hematology, retrovirology, transplant and laboratory safety. Students may also go off campus and work at another medical or research facility.

Clinical sites for students enrolled in the traditional specialist in blood bank technology certificate program may consist of the student's place of employment, local or regional blood centers, or major local or regional medical centers. In addition, clinical sites for SBB students in the Chicago area may include affiliate clinical laboratories.
