Job prospects for graduates of Rush University's medical laboratory science programs are excellent. Our placement rate is typically 100 percent. Hospitals and other health care facilities throughout the United States are facing a critical shortage of qualified medical laboratory personnel. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that between 2010 and 2020, U.S. laboratories will need approximately 42,900 new workers/year to properly staff clinical laboratory facilities. Since accredited medical laboratory programs are graduating fewer than 5,000 each year, job security and increased wages are predicted for graduates of MLS programs.

Specialists in blood bank technology perform and supervise both routine and specialized tests in blood centers and hospital-based transfusion services. Their duties include:
- Testing for blood group antigens
- Investigating abnormalities
- Supporting physicians in transfusion therapy
- Blood collection and processing
- Supervising and/or teaching
Students successfully completing this program will be prepared to assume positions in supervision/management, clinical research or teaching in a hospital, blood center, university, government or health care-related industry.
