4 – 6 p.m. at the UIC Pavilion
525 S. Racine, Chicago, IL 60607
Commencement Ceremony Admission
There are no tickets required; you may invite as many guests as you wish. Seating is reserved for graduates. Guests may seat themselves on a first-come, first-served basis.
All students participating in the ceremony will need to arrive at the UIC Pavilion Parking Garage (525 S. Racine) by 2:30 p.m., on the first level, west side. Signs and greeters will help direct you. Faculty and staff will be there to help line up all students.
Parking and Transportation
Parking is available in surface lots 1A and 1B across the street from the Pavilion (on Harrison) for $10/car. There is ample parking.
If you choose to park at Rush University, there will be a shuttle service between the campus and the UIC Pavilion. Pick up will be at the SW corner of Harrison and Paulina streets. The shuttle before the ceremony will begin at 2:00 p.m. and will run until 4:15 p.m. The shuttle service back to Rush University will begin at 6:00 p.m. and run until 7:00 p.m. Pick up at the Pavilion will be at the NE corner of Racine and Harrison Streets.
Graduate Bag Check
Rush University Medical Center Security will be onsite for the event. They will have a check-in for purses/bags in the garage; however, we recommend that all students leave personal items with family or friends.
UIC Pavilion does not allow outside food, professional cameras with a detachable lens, or paraphernalia of any kind. Book bags and large purses are also not allowed.
The ceremony will begin promptly at 4 p.m. and last approximately two hours. Doors to the Pavilion will open at 3:00 p.m. to allow family and friends to be seated in time. There are no tickets needed for this ceremony. All aisles leading to the seats consist of stairs. If your guests have special accommodation needs, the UIC staff will be of assistance right inside the main doors of the Pavilion.
Graduation Dress Code
There is no formal dress code. Most graduates wear business-like attire under their robes.
Accommodations for Accessibility
The UIC Pavilion is ADA accessible. A person with disabilities can enter at any door, and will have the use of the elevator. For general admission events such as commencement, guests that require a wheelchair are advised to stay at the top of any open section on the mezzanine for their own safety.
The UIC Pavilion will also have wheelchairs available free of charge to assist guests with getting to their seats. The Pavilion offers wheelchair-accessible and companion seating. Guests with wheelchairs may make arrangements prior to arrival by calling
(312) 413-5700 and asking for the guest service coordinator.
All participating graduates will only receive a diploma cover when walking across the stage. After the ceremony all spring term graduates (Rush Medical College, the Graduate College, and College of Nursing) will need to go to the garage to pick up their diploma. Graduates who are still finishing degree requirements will receive their diploma shortly after completion of all these requirements. Also, graduates with incomplete grades or financial obligations will not have a diploma given to them until those obligations are met.
Please feel free to bring your cameras to take photos. The aisles need to remain clear at all times, especially during the processional, ceremony, and recessional. Therefore, family and friends will not be allowed in the aisles on the main floor during the ceremony. Family pictures may be taken immediately after the ceremony.
The Rush University Commencement Committee has arranged for a professional photographer to take a picture of each graduate as they cross the stage and a posed picture after exiting the stage. Participants can order prints directly from Lifetouch.
Regalia Pickup and Return
Prior to the ceremony, regalia will be available for pick-up in Room 994 of Armour Academic Center. Please see the regalia distribution schedule for details. A classmate or faculty member can pick up your regalia for you if you are unable to retrieve it during the assigned days and times.
Regalia will also be available for pick-up at UIC Pavilion garage on the day of the ceremony beginning at 2:00 pm.
Gowns and hoods are to be returned to the first level, west side of the Pavilion Parking Garage after the ceremony. If you wish to purchase your own attire, please contact the Herff Jones rep at (312) 316-1876 or firstname.lastname@example.org. The cap and tassel may be kept as a souvenir.
If you are not planning to participate in the Commencement activities and have not contacted the Office of the Registrar, please do so as soon as possible.
The ceremony will be streamed live for family and friends who are unable to attend the commencement ceremony. As May 21st approaches, we will provide a link for family and friends to view the ceremony live. Check back on the commencement website for more details.
Smoking at the Pavilion
The Pavilion is a smoke-free environment, but they do offer a smoking gate outside Gate 5 during the event. This is a smoking area monitored by Pavilion staff for re-entry.
