HART is an eight-year behavioral randomized clinical trial aimed at determining the impact of group counseling to teach behavioral self-management skills on mortality and hospitalization in patients with heart failure. Secondary endpoints include adherence to pharmacological treatments, quality of life, psychosocial stress and health care costs. The trial is directed by Lynda H. Powell, PhD (principal investigator), James E. Calvin, MD (co-principal investigator), Carlos Mendes de Leon, PhD (co-principal investigator) and Claudia Eaton (project director). Nine hundred two (902) patients with systolic or diastolic heart failure have been recruited throughout Chicago and its suburbs.
