About Us

The Department of Preventive Medicine focuses on primary and secondary disease prevention, particularly in the areas of hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, women's health and minority health. The department has a long track record of research in these areas, including clinical trials and longitudinal studies sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and numerous multi-center drug trials. Physicians in the department see thousands of patients each year at the Rush University Hypertension Clinic. Typically, these patients are at high risk for cardiovascular disease and/or diabetes, or have had difficulty controlling blood pressure.

Currently, the Department is involved in numerous NIH-sponsored activities. These include:

•The Women's Health Initiative (WHI), one of 40 field sites.

•The Women in the Southside Health Project (WISH) one of 7 field sites for the study of Women's Health Across the Nation (SWAN).

•The Heart Failure Adherence and Retention Trial (HART)

•The Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial (SELECT), one of 400+ sites

•The Mexican American Trial of Community Health workers (MATCH)
