The Division of Pharmacology Offers Doctor of Philosophy and Masters of Science Degrees in Pharmacology Through the Graduate College of Rush University.

The Doctor of Philosophy and Master of Science programs offer training in pharmacology and biomedical research.  We believe that a sound training in medical pharmacology and cell biology should be integral to a pharmacology research degree and students are trained in both disciplines in the first year.  A student then does research in a selected area of pharmacology.  During the course of the research, emphasis is placed on developing the student’s understanding and communication of research.

Masters of Science in Pharmacology
Masters Students complete all coursework and research in two years and submit a Thesis.  Graduates of the Masters program proceed to careers working in academic or industry laboratories or may pursue other advanced degrees. The vast majority of our MS graduates find job opportunities or successfully matriculate in advanced training programs within three months graduation.

Ph.D. in Pharmacology
For Ph.D. students, the research in the first two years is aimed at developing a novel research proposal.  The Ph.D. students continue research over the next 3 years and are required to complete a dissertation and publish novel scientific findings in peer-reviewed journals with at least one first author manuscript submitted by the student.  The ultimate outcome of the Ph.D. research experience is the development of an independent investigator who has the necessary scientific skills and credentials to pursue a career in either an industrial or academic setting.
Students in the Ph.D. program receive full tuition remission and a stipend.  Completion is expected within 5 years.

Many of the Faculty of Pharmacology also participate in other graduate programs that are run by through the Dean’s Office of the Graduate College.
Professional Masters Degree in Biotechnology Program
This is a nine-month degree program that emphasizes the acquisition of laboratory skills. This program is designed to prepare a student for a career working in industrial or academic laboratories.
Masters of Science in Clinical Research
This two year program is designed to provide the candidate with all of the formal training needed to apply for, design, carry-out, interpret and submit final reports on clinical research studies. This is a post-graduate program designed for residents or others who have an M.D., D.O., PharmD., Ph.D., as well as any other professional degree.
