Student with Disabilities: Nursing Education and Practice

Proceedings Manual (Entire manual: 224 pages PDF)

In April 2003, The Students with Disabilities: Nursing Education and Practice symposium was held at Rush University Medical Center , Chicago , IL . For two days a select group of 117 experts in nursing curricula, employment, licensure and regulation, health care administration, and national disability rights advocacy discussed and debated issues related to recruiting qualified students with disabilities into the nursing profession. Five priority topics were selected: legal aspects of accommodations, nursing education curricula and accommodations, nursing employment and accommodations, regulations and licensure, and a “perspective on how-to effect change.” The symposium featured a student panel highlighting students with disabilities who successfully completed a nursing program and licensure exam. These former students are currently employed as registered nurses.

We hope that the information and recommendations in the manual will be used as a guide to allow inclusion for qualified persons with disabilities into the nursing profession. You can access the information by individual chapter or by the manual in its entirety.
