Sigma Theta Tau International is an honor society of nursing pursuing excellence in clinical practice, education, research, and leadership. It was founded in 1922 by six nursing students at Indiana University. Using the Greek words meaning "love," "courage," and "honor" to name the organization, they recognized the value of scholarship and the importance of excellence in practice. By 1936, Sigma Theta Tau was the first organization to fund nursing research and has since underwritten more than 250 grants.
The vision of Sigma Theta Tau International, Honor Society of Nursing, is to create a global community of nurses who lead in using scholarship, knowledge, and technology to improve the health of the world's people. The mission of the society is accomplished by supporting the learning and professional development of its members, who strive to improve nursing care worldwide.Over 340,000 members have been inducted worldwide. More than 120,000 active members make Sigma Theta Tau International the second largest nursing organization in the world. Members reside in more than 90 countries. Sixty-one percent of active members hold master's and/or doctoral degrees. Forty-eight percent are clinicians, 21 percent are administrators or supervisors and 20 percent are educators or researchers. There are 431 chapters on 505 college campuses in Australia, Botzwana, Brazil, Canada, Hong Kiong, Mexico, the Netherlands, Pakistan, South Africa, South Korea, Swaziland, Taiwan, Tanzania and the U.S.
