Playwright Eve Ensler has given us permission to say the word "vagina" in public with the success of her groundbreaking play, "The Vagina Monologues." So too, Dr. Elizabeth Stewart has given us permission to learn the basics about an often overlooked part of women's health - vulvovaginal health - with her new book The V Book: A Doctor's Guide to Complete Vulvovaginal Health (2002). Dr. Stewart is a gynecologist who has devoted her practice to vulvovaginal care. In addition to clinical practice, she devotes time to research and teaching about this unique area of women's health. The V Book fills a void in providing consumers and health care providers with accurate information about vulvovaginal health. The book is divided into three parts. The first part, "An Owner's Manual," walks the reader through the anatomy of the vulvovaginal area, how this area is impacted during different stages of women's lives, the basics of self-care, and facts for sexually-active women. Part two, "When You Need Help," provides valuable information about common symptoms, the dangers of self-diagnosis, and what to expect during a pelvic exam. In the "Problems and Answer Guide," Dr. Stewart provides easy-to-understand information about common vulvovaginal health issues. The book includes an extensive list of resources, divided into easy-to-use, area-specific categories. As a practitioner working with women, I highly recommend this book to consumers and health care providers as a valuable and readable resource about vulvovaginal health.
