GRADUATE STUDENT NURSING COMPETENCIES IN COMPLEMENTARY AND ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE (CAM) THERAPIES

  • Incorporate assessment of CAM practices into standard history and physical examinations
    - Elicit information about CAM use
    - Recognize cultural differences underlying the use of CAM therapies

  • Describe indications and safety issues for selected CAM therapies
    - Describe indications and biological basis for selected CAM therapies
    - Describe the efficacy of selected CAM therapies
    - Demonstrate knowledge of known interactions, contraindications, and adverse effects of commonly used CAM therapies

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the research and/or evidence base to support the safety and efficacy of selected CAM therapies
    - Critically evaluate the scientific merit of CAM research literature and consumer information
    - Apply pertinent research findings and/or evidence base in patient care management

  • Apply knowledge of the safety, efficacy, and appropriateness of CAM therapies in patient care management
    - Assist patients in making informed decisions on the use of CAM therapies
    - Demonstrate effective clinical decision-making regarding the use of CAM therapies as part of an overall plan of care

  • Acquire knowledge for working in a collaborative manner with CAM practitioners
    - Describe the training, licensing, and credentialing of CAM practitioners
    - Identify indications for patient consultation with CAM practitioners
    - Collaborate with CAM practitioners in managing the care of patients
