The use of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies is prevalent among the American public. However, most conventional health care providers have limited knowledge about the biological bases, indications, and safety of CAM therapies. Additionally, they lack the preparation to collaborate with CAM practitioners to provide integrated health care. We are committed to incorporating CAM content into our undergraduate and graduate nursing curricula, and providing CAM continuing education programs for nursing faculty and practicing nurses. Didactic and web-based approaches will be utilized to deliver educational materials encompassing biological, social, and cultural aspects of CAM use. A further goal is to assist faculty at other institutions to integrate CAM content into their curricula. We believe that providing nurses with knowledge and skills to collaborate with CAM practitioners offers patients a more holistic approach to care.

This program is supported by a CAM Education Grant from the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), National Institutes of Health (NIH). To view all NCCAM R25 Grant Recipients, click here.
