American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA)
This nonprofit organization is dedicated to developing and using information technologies to improve health care. Members include physicians, nurses, computer and information scientists, biomedical engineers, medical librarians, and academic researchers and educators. They hold an annual symposium and a smaller spring meeting and publish The Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association. Their current Working Groups focus on a variety of health care informatics areas, including such interests as family practice and primary care, nursing, clinical information systems, genomics, medical imaging, prevention and public health, consumer health, and others.

Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC)
This is a nonprofit organization founded in 1876 to work for reform in medical education. The AAMC comprises the 125 accredited U.S. medical schools, the 16 accredited Canadian medical schools, 400 major teaching hospitals and health systems, 90 academic and professional societies representing nearly 100,000 faculty members, and the nation's medical students and residents. The administrative leadership of medical schools and teaching hospitals are all served by a variety of professional affinity/resource groups housed within the AAMC. The AAMC Archives from 1938-1966 are available through the National Library of Medicine.

AAMC's Council of Academic Societies (CAS)
The Council of Academic Societies (CAS) is one of three governing councils of the Association of American Medical Colleges, along with the Council of Deans and the Council of Teaching Hospitals and Health Systems. CAS is comprised of 96 academic societies devoted to biomedical & behavioral research, medical education, and patient care. The collective membership of the CAS societies include essentially all faculty members and scientists in American medical schools engaged in life sciences research, research training, and medical education. It serves as a powerful forum for discussing and exchanging information of common interest to medical school faculty and for evaluating and recommending policy initiatives to the AAMC.

Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics (APGO)
This national organization is dedicated to education in the areas of women's health, obstetrics and gynecology at the medical school level. This Australian group aims to promote, support and advance education in the health professions, to facilitate communication between educators in the health professions, and to recognize, facilitate and disseminate high quality educational research in health professions education. They publish a peer-reviewed journal, a news bulletin, and other publications and hold an annual conference.
Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE)
ASHE promotes collaboration among members and others engaged in the study of higher education through research, conferences, and publications, including its journal, The Review of Higher Education. ASHE is a scholarly society with about 1,900 members dedicated to higher education as a field of study. Association for Surgical Education
This organization, formed in 1980, represents over 190 medical schools and institutions throughout the United States and Canada. Its primary goal is to promote the art and science of education in surgery. They seek to develop innovative teaching aids and programs and effective educational interventions; to design effective faculty development programs for surgical educators; and to promote and support research in the surgical education field. Their Clearinghouse on Education may be of particular interest. It collects and distributes information and materials related to numerous topics in surgical education: curriculum models, teaching interventions, performance evaluation techniques and instruments, faculty development materials and instructional materials such as videotapes and resource books.

Council on Medical Student Education in Pediatrics (COMSEP)
The Council on Medical Student Education in Pediatrics (COMSEP) fosters excellence in undergraduate medical education in pediatrics. Functioning under the auspices of the Association of Medical School Pediatric Department Chairmen (AMSPDC), COMSEP is the official organization of north American educators with administrative responsibility for undergraduate medical education in pediatrics. It promotes the development, dissemination, and evaluation of curricular materials and educational resources through inter-institutional collaboration. It advocates for research in pediatric medical education. The effectiveness of members as teachers of students and faculty, and as academic leaders, administrators and mentors is developed and enhanced through participation in COMSEP activities.

Society of Directors of Research in Medical Education (SDRME)
The Society is an organization of directors of units in medical education whose mission it is to advance the role of research in medical education. They seek solutions to issues and problems related to the success of our various units. SDRME has grown to about 40+ members from various school of medicine throughout the U.S., Canada and abroad. The membership requirements state that the unit must be a part of an accredited U.S./Canadian medical school and must have an identifiable mission of research, along with other criteria. Society of Teachers of Family Medicine
The Society, founded in 1967, respond to needs of family medicine educators. Their current membership includes more than 5,000 teachers of family medicine. The administrative offices are housed with the American Academy of Family Physicians in Leawood, Kansas, enhancing the close relationship between the two organizations. They offer a variety of publications to members (Family Medicine, The STFM Messenger and the Annals of Family Medicine). STFM holds an annual spring conference and well as other conferences including the Predoctoral Education Conference focusing on medical student education. Their Web site offers a variety of information of interest to family medicine educators.
