Students interested in Work-Study should start the process by visiting the Office of Student Financial Aid
Federal College Work-Study is a form of student financial assistance available through Rush University Medical Center. Students must apply for financial aid and have their eligibility determined before participating in the Work-Study program. Students who have "Student Employment" listed on their award offer are eligible to participate in the program, but ALL STUDENTS must still complete the paperwork below.
The federal government pays approximately 75% of the student's wages, with their hiring department picking up the remaining 25%. Students will be paid on a bi-weekly basis and are considered Rush University Medical Center employees. First-time employees must complete an Employment Application, have a physical, TB test, and go through a Criminal Background Check prior to beginning their job.
Required Documents - available from Office of Student Financial Aid:
- Federal College Work-Study Authorization -- must be signed by student and completed by hiring manager.
- Employment Application -- must be completed by student if they have never worked for the Medical Center. Application is available online, and students should apply to job number 2008-1114 (WORK STUDY STUDENT).
Once complete, the Federal College Work-Study Authorization should be submitted to the Office of Student Financial Aid for final review and approval.
Paychecks will not be issued unless all required forms and orientation requirements are met.

General Summary: The occupational therapy work study student acts under the direct supervision of the Fieldwork Coordinator and faculty of the Occupational Therapy Department. Tasks include various clerical assignments related to assistance with the academic and clinical fieldwork programs.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
- Under the direction of the fieldwork coordinator, performs basic copying, scanning, filing, office communication and record keeping tasks as assigned. This also includes data entry using an Access database for tracking students and sites where students are placed for clinical affiliations.
- Prepares mailings to clinical fieldwork sites as directed.
- Maintains filing system to track contracts and information on fieldwork sites.
- Assists in the functions of the department at all levels and as needed.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Basic computer and information technology to assist in the development of support of an electronic environment.
- Basic reading, writing, counting and math to support operations of the department.
- Basic medical healthcare terminology to communicate in a healthcare environment.
Skills:

Abilities :
- Must be able to physically hand carry items throughout the medical center complex, associated buildings and academic office areas to transmit information.
- Must be able to lift, carry, and move items up to 20 pounds upon occasion to assist with inventory management.
- Must be able to stand, walk, lift and push while assisting with patient care.

General Summary
The primary role of the incumbent is to staff the university_news@rush.edu process in order to raise the visibility of Rush University through internal and external communications. Most of the job functions can be performed off-site via computer and telephone, etc. However, some in-person meeting attendance and handling of physical materials may be required. If working off-site, the incumbent will be required to supply his or her own computer and phone line.
Principal Duties:
- Assist in the coordination of communication initiatives related to Rush University students, faculty, and staff.
- Review submissions to the university_news@rush.edu e-mail database daily:
- Follow up on missing information (e.g., photo, local town, schools graduated from, etc.) related to the submission.
- Assist in refining content submitted to conform to Rush standards and to read fluidly.
- Field inquiries to Web site page managers, alumni affairs, philanthropy, media relations, internal communications, deans’ offices, and other venues as appropriate.
- Create submission tracking spreadsheet to monitor process from point of submission to resulting communication postings (e.g., to Rush University Web site, Rush news releases, NewsRounds, alumni e-messages and print newsletters, etc.).
- Review and organize questions and topics submitted to the provost_t_deutsch@rush.edu e-mail database prior to provost open forums and other similar events.
- Participate in University-related communication meetings, following up on action items as assigned.
- Assist staff with other communication-related projects as requested.

Major Responsibilities:
Provide clerical and technical support to laboratory service
Essential & Critical Tasks:
Performs accurate computer entry of demographic information, and laboratory test orders. Notifies appropriate personnel of problems.
Prepares and processes specimens correctly. Labels specimens, slides, and cassettes accurately.
Performs routine instrument upkeep and maintenance.
Retrieves samples from outpatient locations within the medical center.
Uses the telephone properly and gives accurate information.
Volunteers or willingly participates in special projects and completes them within an agreed upon time frame.
Qualifications:
Education: High school graduate. Knowledge of medical and laboratory terminology preferred.
Experience: Typing skills of 35 wpm. Previous experience in a hospital laboratory is helpful.

Working Conditions:
The technician’s time is divided between laboratory test order entry and working in a laboratory with frequent exposure to potentially infectious specimens.
CLIA Qualification for Testing :
Employees in this job classification are qualified to perform moderate complexity testing. Employees’ education and/or laboratory experience meet the requirements delineated in the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988 (CLIA ‘88).
