Federal College Work-Study

Students interested in Work-Study should start the process by visiting the Office of Student Financial Aid
Federal College Work-Study is a form of student financial assistance available through Rush University Medical Center. Students must apply for financial aid and have their eligibility determined before participating in the Work-Study program. Students who have "Student Employment" listed on their award offer are eligible to participate in the program, but ALL STUDENTS must still complete the paperwork below.
The federal government pays approximately 75% of the student's wages, with their hiring department picking up the remaining 25%. Students will be paid on a bi-weekly basis and are considered Rush University Medical Center employees. First-time employees must complete an Employment Application, have a physical, TB test, and go through a Criminal Background Check prior to beginning their job.
Required Documents - available from Office of Student Financial Aid:
- Federal College Work-Study Authorization -- must be signed by student and completed by hiring manager.
- Employment Application -- must be completed by student if they have never worked for the Medical Center. Application is available online, and students should apply to job number 2008-1114 (WORK STUDY STUDENT).
Once complete, the Federal College Work-Study Authorization should be submitted to the Office of Student Financial Aid for final review and approval.
Paychecks will not be issued unless all required forms and orientation requirements are met.

Components and Standards for PC Lab Assistant
Component
- Prepares METC for start (or closing) of business. Assists with booting up/powering down 100 computer workstations in the PC lab and classroom. Opens/closes media towers in the viewing rooms.
Standard
Assesses whether PCs are in working order; viewing rooms are in order and presentable for patron use. Notes whether viewing room furniture is in place.
Component
- Assists METC patrons at the service counter with the circulation of AV software resources, assisting with AV hardware questions. Fields basic computer software questions. Assists clients with questions about how to use print services in the computer labs. Answers routine inquiries about departmental policies and procedures.
Standard
Clients are treated courteously and promptly. Record keeping is accurate. Reports more difficult inquiries to full-time staff.
Component
- Assists Microcomputer Services Manager with daily lab/classroom maintenance.
Standard
Prepares daily workstation sign-up sheets; posts computer classroom schedules; post room cleaning schedule notices; monitors the supply of information rack handouts; monitor PC & laser printer supplies (including: paper, toner, floppy disks, etc.).

Other:
This position is for the entire academic year. Hours are available during session breaks.

General Summary
This position offers a student the opportunity to learn about how an academic medical center and a private health sciences university function while working on communications-related projects to enhance the image of Rush’s academic component, Rush University. Most of the job functions can be performed off-site using student’s computer and telephone, etc., with some in-person meeting attendance and handling of physical materials required.
Principal Duties:
- Organize Rush University internal and external communications (online and print ad planning, search engine marketing, internal distribution list announcements, news releases, video scripts, web site and social media updates, prospective student e-messaging and microsite content, etc.).
- Participate in planning quarterly provost communications and events (YouTube video messages, web bylines, e-blasts, Facebook posts, Provost Open Forums, etc.)
- Coordinate announcements and logistics for Rush University Student Faculty Tea events hosted by President and his wife in their home.
- Collect data from vendors (Education Dynamics, TMP Worldwide, Allstar Directories, Matthews corporate, etc.) and internally available systems (RUConnected, webtrends, IS helpdesk, etc.) to measure return-on-investment for university communications.
- Learn Rush University web content management system (Fatwire) and basic HTML in order to maintain provost messages, About Rush University, and University Relations sites.
- Participate in Rush University Communications User Group meeting, preparing chair and following up on action items involving media relations, internal communications, student affairs, marketing communications, research affairs, web and IT, etc. Maintain and present quarterly scorecard measures to group.
- Participate in photo shoot coordination (scouting locations, selecting participants, selecting photos for print and web, etc.).
- Review and organize questions and topics submitted to the provost_t_deutsch@rush.edu and university_news@rush.edu e-mail databases.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Solid verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in Web and Microsoft Office applications (especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) with the aptitude to quickly learn new computer systems and processes. Basic understanding of Access and HTML a plus.
- Ability to organize, prioritize and multi-task while coordinating projects from start-to-finish.
