Master of Science in Nursing
The Generalist Entry Master's (GEM) requires a minimum of 91 quarter hours of didactic and clinical instruction. Candidates must pass an "End of Program" examination. Graduates are eligible to write the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses and sit for CNL certification. The advanced practice MSN programs require a minimum of 55 quarter hours and must include all course work and residencies required for the selected area of concentration. No fewer than 28 quarter hours shall be spent in residence at Rush University for the advanced practice MSN degree. Part-time master's students must complete degree requirements within five years.
Doctor of Nursing Practice
The DNP degree requires a minimum of 41 quarter hours of post-master's study. Part-time doctor of nursing practice students must complete degree requirements within five years.
Doctor of Philosophy
The Doctor of Philosophy degree requires completion of the approved individual program of study. Coursework for the PhD must be the equivalent of 90 quarter hours of graduate credit in addition to the completed dissertation. No fewer than 45 quarter hours of study shall be spent in residence at Rush University for the doctor of philosophy degree. All PhD students must complete degree requirements within eight years.
Graduation and Commencement
All students at the end of the term in which they graduate must complete a Degree Approval form to clear the college and university. Diplomas will not be distributed until all University requirements have been met.
Commencement is held annually at the end of the spring term. Students from the College of Nursing are permitted to participate in the ceremony if they complete degree requirements in the preceding fall, winter or spring terms. Students who will complete degree requirements in Summer Term, with the exception of doctoral candidates, may participate in the preceding May ceremony. PhD candidates may participate in commencement ceremonies only after they have successfully defended their dissertation. Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) students must have completed all course work and have the signed Doctor of Nursing Project Approval Form to the Office of the Registrar by the end of the spring term in order to be eligible to participate.
